Another use occurred to me today, so i searched the web excitedly and found an existing mention of it: Defining Variables inside Block Scope.
Background
JavaScript, in spite of its superficial resemblance to C and C++, does not scope variables to the block they are defined in:
var name = "Joe"...
That's a great answer :-)

Which column will be used to determine the oldest? If there's a date field:

join myTable z on x.subscriberEmail = z.subscriberEmail
where x.createdOn > z.createdOn
Should leave one record per email address.

I have an auto refresh script that refreshes a page every 3 seconds. The page it refreshes ha few database queries. When I get 20 or more members on my site the server crashes because of all the calls to the database. Is there another way to check for changes in the database?

@BoltClock, I was saying yesterday that none of the answers really caught my fancy (even my own). But that one is definitely the answer as far as I'm concerned.
@PiersMyers, they have this one in French, I can't remember if I've ever seen an English equivalent: "If you're taking my place, you can take my disability too"
@Benjol not seen the equivalent in the UK. No one here seems to pay any attention to disabled parking areas and will use them regardless. I think the guy with a bat would be a good idea

Southern Philly suburbs that I used to live in are notorious for red light runners. So much so, that you have to take a few seconds into account before moving from a green light, just incase someone is trying to gun it across the way.

@Benjol I don't really care what the room is called, but apparently "foo bar" is really funny, based on the feedback in here. I read it and thought "heh, pun", and that was it
@spoulson That's why I don't like it, every day somebody makes a joke about drinking and says "get it? Because we're in the Tavern " and dissolves into laughter
@Josh I considered posting "The Tavern (General)" as an answer on that thread, but by the time I thought of it I figured there was no way it would ever catch up to the others
Which is why I don't particularly like poll questions in the first place. We would need a way to have people submit answers and then display them to everyone at once, or the earlier answers are almost guaranteed to win

Your honor... This is a general discussion room with no set topic or limitations. Organically, a contest was created to change the name, and a good time was had by all. A lot of people took part in coming up with the name, and throwing their weight behind their favorites.
