Don't wanna make a new meta post about this: just looking for some guidance. a few mins back some guy poped into the js room and posted some spam links. "hey friends I made a new XYZ link link" and it was obviously nothing of value - we've never seen this guy and his site was a poorly put together blog with a million ads. So I binned it and checked his profile. Turns out of his 18 answers all 18 had links back to his blog (related or not). Andrew Barber had removed a lot of them

I removed what appeared to be the rest.

But should we be raising this issue to mods? or just flag a post or two and hope they see that he's doing this a lot

The issue: you are converting a VARCHAR to a VARCHAR. Your query is fine if you use a DATETIME. SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(19), CAST('11/10/11 10:56:58' AS DATETIME), 120); See fiddle.

My point to Chibueze was that most of them don't get deleted, since we aren't supposed to be deleting wrong answers, so there are plenty of bad examples sticking around.

Because of the super ultra long comment thread, anyone coming along can figure out that while that may have helped the asker, it's a bad practice (if they read it)

Yes, I got that. and yes, nothing is worse than incorrect accepted answers. They are in need of the highest level of downvoting.

@LanceRoberts: I'm not discouraging downvoting here. I'm actually encouraging it but trying to discourage users from deleting the questions. What if for instance I get 20 downvotes, that's 40 reputation stuck in there. Why wouldn't I delete that?

Oh, these links are for Chib's reading of existing cases and real-practice on Stack Overflow and reasons why this particular meta suggestion was downvoted heavily and nobody seems to find merit in his idea.

Also, Lance is almost the community Devil's Advocate. Sometimes. ;-) He actively strives to keep us from being too "navel-gazing", even though we don't always agree with him, he always has a good view point to consider.

Hmmmm. I think that's probably because you are not in Nigeria. There are lots of them here (arrested now and then), but they probably make arrests that get on the news outside more because there's better security and media sensitivity about them there.

Hehe. It's an unfortunate thing though. Many here are working to see how they can channel the energy of such youths to something more useful, but most of them actually get addicted to it (it comes with chatting and all sorts of romantic calls that make them feel important and needed when they are pretending to be someone else), so it sorts of a complicated issue once you get into it and start having positive results
